Vinesh Phogat Announces Retirement from Wrestling After Olympic Disqualification 🇮🇳

India's wrestling sensation, Vinesh Phogat, has announced her retirement from wrestling, marking the end of an illustrious career. The decision comes in the wake of her disqualification from the Paris Olympics due to a weight discrepancy, which dashed her hopes of clinching a medal for India.

Vinesh's Emotional Goodbye

In a heartfelt post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Vinesh expressed her sentiments, saying, "Wrestling has won, and I have lost. Forgive me. My courage is shattered, and I no longer have the strength to fight." She bid farewell to wrestling with a poignant message: "Wrestling 2001-2024 Goodbye."

The disqualification was a significant blow for Vinesh, who had reached the finals in the 50kg freestyle category at the Paris Olympics. She was deemed ineligible due to being 100 grams over the weight limit. Despite challenging the decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, hoping to secure a silver medal, Vinesh chose to retire before a ruling could be made.

A Storied Career

Vinesh Phogat has been a trailblazer in Indian wrestling, inspiring countless athletes with her tenacity and skill. Her journey, however, has not been without its challenges. She faced setbacks in previous Olympics, including a leg injury in Rio and an early exit in Tokyo. In Paris, despite a strong showing in her new weight category, the disqualification overshadowed her efforts.

Throughout her career, Vinesh has been known for her resilience and fighting spirit, often overcoming adversity both on and off the mat. Her decision to compete in the 50kg category this year was a strategic move to avoid facing favorite U Susaki in her regular 53kg category. Vinesh's performance at the Olympics, where she became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the finals, remains a testament to her dedication and skill.
