Vietnam Sentences Real Estate Tycoon To Death In 12.5 Billion Dollars Fraud Case

Recently, the famous Vietnamese businessman Truong My Lan was sentenced to death by the court of that country for defrauding the country's bank of more than Rs. To this extent, the court issued a verdict on Thursday (April 11).

She is one of the most prominent businesswomen in Vietnam. He continues to be the chairman of the 'Van Thin Phat' real estate company. However, she was found guilty of defrauding Vietnam's Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) of nearly 12.5 billion dollars (Rs. lakh crores in Indian currency) over a period of ten years. She was found guilty in this case and sentenced to death by the court there. This is one of the biggest scams in the country of Vietnam. As a result, the people of the country eagerly awaited the verdict of the court in the case. Along with Lan, 85 other accused in the case were tried for five weeks. The list of accused including Lan includes ex-central bankers, ex-government officials and ex-SCB officials. They have been accused of abuse of power, bribery and violation of banking laws.

Truong My Lan owns about 90 percent of the local Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB). Over the years, she has targeted government officials and businessmen in Vietnam to commit fraud at this bank. Officials found that 304 trillion dong (Vietnamese currency) was taken from SCB Bank between 2012 and 2022 by creating 916 fake applications. That means she won more than 12.5 billion dollars. This is 3 percent of the country's GDP. In 2022, this scandal came to light. The police arrested her in October of the same year. About 42 thousand people lost due to this scam. This case has shocked the entire South East Asian country. Officials found that SCB officials took 5.2 million dollars as bribe for this.
