#UPIPaymentBan: Telangana Halts Electricity Bill Payments via UPI Apps ⚡

Telangana power distribution companies, TGSPDCL and TGNPDCL, have made a significant announcement. Starting from July 1, monthly electricity bills can only be paid through their official websites and apps. All payment gateways and banks will no longer accept electricity bill payments. This decision, as explained by officials, is based on directives from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) which have been issued to all electricity companies nationwide. Consequently, Telangana electricity consumers can no longer use UPI apps like PhonePe, Paytm, Amazon Pay, and Google Pay for bill payments.

UPI apps have been widely used for paying electricity bills, especially in urban areas, with many consumers relying on these payment gateways for years. The announcement on social media has sparked dissatisfaction among users, with many criticizing the strict decision. Some have remarked that this step is a setback for the 'Digital India' initiative. iPhone users, in particular, have noted the lack of any app available for paying electricity bills. There are suggestions from users to enable bill payments through the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS).
