The chilling details of the murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata have shocked the nation, leading to the intervention of the CBI and the Supreme Court. The prime suspect, Sanjay Roy, had been on a drinking spree on August 8 before visiting two red-light areas in the city. After these visits, he behaved indecently with women on his way back to the hospital, according to the authorities.
Roy returned to the hospital around 4 a.m., and later that morning, he entered the seminar hall on the third floor, where the victim was sleeping. He then committed the heinous crime. Roy later left the hospital and returned to the police barracks in Salt Lake. Initially, the hospital staff reported the incident as a suicide, but it was soon determined to be a murder, leading to Roy's arrest based on CCTV footage.
Six days after the incident, on August 14, the Calcutta High Court handed over the investigation to the CBI. The CBI quickly took control of the hospital's CCTV footage as part of the investigation. On August 20, the Supreme Court took suo moto cognizance of the case, ordering that the victim's name, photograph, and video clips not be shared in the media or on social platforms. The Supreme Court also questioned the hospital principal's attempt to cover up the crime as a suicide.
Following the Supreme Court's intervention, the principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh, was placed on long leave, and the Mamata Banerjee government transferred him, adding a political twist to the case. The case has raised serious concerns about the integrity of evidence, public safety, and the security of women in sensitive areas like hospitals.
