#RakshaBandhanTips: Avoid These Mistakes with Your Sister's Rakhi!

According to astrology, it’s considered inauspicious to discard the Rakhi within one or two days after Raksha Bandhan. Here’s what you should know about properly handling your Rakhi after the festival.

Auspicious Time for Tying Rakhi in 2024

Raksha Bandhan is on Monday, August 19, 2024. This year, there’s a "Bhadra shadow" during the day, so astrologers recommend celebrating Raksha Bandhan after 1:30 PM.

Best Time for Tying Rakhi: 1:46 PM to 4:19 PM

Evening Auspicious Time: 6:56 PM to 9:07 PM

Direction to Face While Tying Rakhi

On Raksha Bandhan, the brother should sit facing east, while the sister should face west. Before tying the Rakhi, the sister should apply a tilak of kumkum and sandalwood on her brother’s forehead and sprinkle akshata (rice grains) on his head. Only after this should she tie the Rakhi.

How Long to Keep the Rakhi

Don’t remove the Rakhi within one or two days after Raksha Bandhan. Ideally, keep it on for at least 21 days. If that’s too long, at least keep it until Janmashtami.

What to Do with the Rakhi After Removal

Once you remove the Rakhi, don’t just throw it away. According to astrology, wrap it in a red cloth and place it in a sacred spot or with your sister's belongings. Keep it until the next Raksha Bandhan, then immerse it in flowing water. If the Rakhi breaks or gets damaged, bury it near a tree along with a one-rupee coin, or immerse it in water.
