Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Ukraine soon, as confirmed by the Indian Foreign Ministry on Monday. Although specific details about the visit have not been disclosed yet, the ministry assured that more information will be shared soon. National media reports suggest that Modi might visit Kyiv later this month, marking his first visit to the country since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, when Russian forces launched a military operation aimed at capturing major Ukrainian cities within weeks. However, with support from NATO countries, Ukraine has managed to prolong the conflict, which has now stretched into its third year. Despite ongoing attacks from both sides, there seems to be no end in sight to the war. In this context, Prime Minister Modi has repeatedly urged both Russia and Ukraine to seek a peaceful resolution through dialogue, emphasizing that war is not the solution.
This visit is significant as it is Modi's first trip to Ukraine since the war began. Previously, during the G7 Summit in Italy, Modi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Zelenskyy had also congratulated Modi on his re-election and invited him to visit Ukraine.
In contrast, Modi visited Russia on June 8 for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, where he held bilateral talks with President Vladimir Putin and was honored with Russia's highest civilian award. During this visit, Modi's warm interactions with Putin drew criticism from Zelenskyy. Now, all eyes are on Modi's upcoming visit to Ukraine, as it could have significant diplomatic implications.
