OTT Censorship Drama: What’s Really Going On? 🎬🧐

TL;DR: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat have raised concerns about "disgusting content" on OTT platforms. But let's be real, OTT has been around for years, and Sangh Parivar has been in power for more than 17 years. So, why all this noise now? 🤔 Could it be that independent content that criticizes right-wing policies is making them uncomfortable? Let’s break it down!

Why the Sudden Obsession with OTT? 📺🚨

The OTT boom in India, especially after the pandemic, has made platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Hotstar household names. These platforms offer a huge variety of content—some of it bold, critical, and challenging the status quo. 🎥 But now, as more and more politically inconvenient shows and movies hit the screens, there’s been a growing call from the Sangh Parivar to censor or regulate OTT content more tightly. 🚨

But here's the kicker: despite being in power for over a decade, and implementing OTT regulations like the 2021 IT Rules, which created a three-tier regulatory system for complaints and self-regulation, suddenly there's this new push for pre-censorship. This makes you wonder—why now? 🤨

Global Comparison: OTT Regulations in Other Countries 🌍

It’s not just India dealing with OTT regulation. Countries like the UK and Australia also regulate OTT, but the focus is usually on vulgarity, violence, and protecting children. 🇬🇧 For example, Australia has the Classification Board, which ensures content is suitable for its viewers, while the UK imposes strict rules for parental controls. 🛡️

In contrast, India's move to regulate OTT seems to be leaning more towards censorship rather than just protecting viewers from inappropriate content. Some shows have faced complaints for "hurting religious sentiments" or "misrepresenting history" (remember the whole Tandav and Mirzapur controversies?). 🤷‍♀️

MediaFx Opinion: Control or Freedom? 💭

At MediaFx, we get that OTT platforms need some kind of regulation, especially to prevent vulgar or harmful content from reaching younger audiences. But pushing for censorship just because certain content criticizes the government? That’s not cool. ❌🎬 We believe in a self-regulation system where platforms categorize content based on age suitability (like what we already have with the IT Rules 2021) instead of imposing blanket political censorship. Trying to control OTT just because it's critical of right-wing ideologies feels like a step towards curbing freedom of expression. Remember Annapoorni which has already been taken off OTTs even without a formal censorship structure. Annapoorni had depicted a chef who comes from an orthodox family cooking non-veg. On this reason the right wing forced the film to be taken of OTTs.

OTT content is expanding at such a fast pace that pre-censorship is simply impractical. 📈 Plus, it’s not just about offensive content—it’s about voices and stories that challenge power structures, and that’s a crucial part of any democracy. 🙌

What do you think? Is censorship the way forward, or should content creators have the freedom to tell their stories? Drop your thoughts below! 👇💬
