NEET 2024 Controversy Grace Marks Scrapped, Retest Announced for Affected Students

The NEET UG 2024 exam for MBBS and BDS admissions has landed in controversy due to allegations of malpractice. Several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court, prompting the court to issue notices on Thursday. The Center has taken a crucial decision in response, announcing the removal of grace marks awarded to 1563 candidates. These candidates will be given the chance to retake the exam, as stated by the Supreme Court. This move is seen as a relief for NEET aspirants in Assam.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) clarified that affected candidates can either retake the NEET exam or continue with their current rank without the grace marks. The retest is scheduled for June 23, with results expected by June 30. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized that the government respects the Supreme Court's decision.

What Happened?

The NEET UG 2024 exam took place on May 5. On the exam day, some students in Meghalaya received incorrect question papers. Upon notifying the invigilator an hour into the exam, the correct papers were provided, but these students lost an hour of exam time. As compensation, NTA awarded them grace marks. However, this mistake occurred in six out of 4500 exam centers nationwide, causing significant discrepancies in ranks and sparking protests.

In light of these events, the Center's decision to remove the grace marks and offer a retest has brought relief to NEET aspirants, who believe this will improve their chances of securing a seat in a good college.
