Love Affairs with Superstars, But Settled with a Doctor: The Story of Vyjayanthimala

Vyjayanthimala, one of the most celebrated actresses who ruled the film industry for nearly two decades, was often the subject of rumors linking her to some of the biggest stars of her time. Her on-screen chemistry with Dilip Kumar was mesmerizing, particularly in the 1961 film "Ganga-Jamuna." It was during the filming of this movie that rumors of a close relationship between the two began to surface. However, this bond didn’t last long.

Soon after, Raj Kapoor, another superstar and already married to Krishna Kapoor, entered her life. Raj Kapoor and Vyjayanthimala’s relationship became the talk of the town, especially after they starred together in films like "Nazrana" (1961) and "Sangam" (1964). Their off-screen romance caused significant tension in Raj Kapoor’s marriage, leading to a temporary rift between him and his wife. Ultimately, under pressure from his wife, Raj Kapoor distanced himself from Vyjayanthimala and promised never to work with her again, and he kept that promise.

Interestingly, during the shooting of one of her films, Vyjayanthimala contracted pneumonia while spending extended periods at Dal Lake. The family doctor of Raj Kapoor, Dr. Chamanlal Bali, treated her. During this time, they grew fond of each other, and what began as admiration turned into a serious relationship. Despite Dr. Bali being already married, rumors swirled that Vyjayanthimala paid a substantial amount to his wife to facilitate their divorce. Eventually, Vyjayanthimala and Dr. Bali got married, marking the end of her publicized romances with the superstars.
