Kerala witnessed a tragic landslide in Wayanad, causing widespread devastation and loss of lives. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and assured that rescue operations are in full swing to save those trapped under the debris. "The landslide in Wayanad is deeply distressing. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and those injured," tweeted PM Modi.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with the involvement of multiple agencies to save lives. PM Modi also communicated with Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, ensuring full support from the central government. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
Continuous heavy rains in Wayanad triggered the landslide, causing the death toll to rise. So far, 19 bodies have been recovered, and many others have been rescued with serious injuries. The landslide destroyed hundreds of homes, causing significant damage. The village of Surla Malai has been completely devastated, and the roads from Kannur to the affected areas are in a similar state.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been dispatched from Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu, and are working tirelessly at the site. However, ongoing heavy rains are hindering the operations. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan is personally overseeing the rescue efforts. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has also sprung into action, providing helpline numbers for emergency services. Two Air Force helicopters, Mi-17 and ALH, have been deployed from Sulur Air Base to assist in the rescue operations. Hospitals in Vythiri, Kalpetta, Meppadi, and Mananthavady are prepared to treat the injured.
