The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 27 Indian fishermen for allegedly illegally entering its waters. They were detained in the waters north of Point Pedro on Sunday night and the boat seized.
Sri Lanka Navy has disclosed this in an official statement on Monday. It said that the fishermen have been handed over to the authorities for investigation. This is the second time in two days that Indian fishermen have been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy. Last Saturday, 12 fishermen were detained and their three boats seized. They were arrested on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in their waters. This issue of fishermen has become a problem between India and Sri Lanka for several years. The Pak strait that separates Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka is rich in fisheries. In the past, Sri Lankan authorities have arrested Indian fishermen who went fishing here, and have fired at them. In 2023, the Lankan Navy detained 240 Indian fishermen. Discussions are going on between the two countries. šš
