How to Switch Networks Without Changing Your Mobile Number 📴

With major telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) hiking their tariff plans, many customers are considering switching to the government-run BSNL. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) allows you to keep your existing number while changing to a new carrier. Here’s how you can switch networks without the hassle of updating everyone with a new number.

Eligibility for MNP

Before starting the porting process, ensure that your number is eligible. Typically, your current number must be active with your existing carrier for at least 90 days. Also, make sure there are no pending dues or unresolved issues with your current provider.

Choosing a New Carrier

Research different carriers to find the one that best suits your needs and budget. Compare their plans, coverage, and customer service. Once you've chosen a new carrier, visit their store or website to begin the porting process.

Getting the Porting Code

To port your number, you'll need a unique porting code (UPC). You can obtain this by sending an SMS to 1900 with the word "PORT" followed by your 10-digit mobile number. You'll receive the UPC from your current carrier, which is usually valid for 15 days.

Submitting the Porting Request

Complete the Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) and Porting Form for your chosen operator, including the valid UPC. Make any necessary payments and submit KYC documents. Collect your new SIM card from the operator's customer service center or point of sale. You'll receive a confirmation message from the MNP service provider regarding your porting request. You have up to 24 hours to cancel the porting request if you change your mind.

Final Steps

Porting within the same Licensed Service Area (LSA) typically takes 3 working days. For corporate numbers, it takes 5 working days. In Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the Northeastern states, it can take up to 15 working days. You will receive an SMS with the porting date and time. On the designated day, simply replace your old SIM card with the new one.
