Dwarka Tirumala Rao Appointed as New AP DGP

Big news from Andhra Pradesh! Dwarka Tirumala Rao has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for the state. He was serving as the Managing Director of APSRTC before this. The state Chief Secretary, Neerabh Kumar Prasad, issued the orders on Wednesday night. This decision is effective immediately. Tirumala Rao is a 1989 batch IPS officer.

In June 2021, Tirumala Rao took charge as the MD of APSRTC and has been managing its responsibilities for the past three years. Before that, he served as the DGP of the Railway Department and also worked as the Commissioner of Police in Vijayawada.

Just last month, ahead of the AP elections, the Election Commission transferred the then-DGP KV Rajendranath Reddy. There was speculation that Tirumala Rao might be appointed as the new DGP, but Harish Kumar Gupta was unexpectedly given the role on May 6. The newly formed coalition government initially considered continuing with Gupta as the DGP.

However, during the swearing-in ceremony of former CM Chandrababu Naidu, an incident occurred that changed the situation. Governor Nazir got stuck in traffic for 40 minutes, preventing him from welcoming Prime Minister Modi. The Governor expressed his displeasure, and the PM also showed dissatisfaction. This incident led to the removal of Harish Kumar Gupta, paving the way for Tirumala Rao's appointment as the new AP DGP.
