Crackdown on Foreign Workers in Canada: Indian Community Protests 🇨🇦🇮🇳

The government of Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada, has decided to reduce the number of foreign workers, putting many Indians in a tough spot. Facing the threat of losing their jobs and having to return to India, several Indians have started a hunger strike, demanding an extension of their visas. The hunger strike is taking place in Charlottetown, and on Tuesday, the protestors announced they would continue the strike indefinitely, even refusing liquids. The strike has reached its fourth day, with one protestor stating that 50 workers have already left Canada due to pressure from authorities.

Jaspreet Singh Sivia, one of the protestors, said that sudden changes in immigration rules have left many affected, including those on the verge of obtaining permanent residency. The protestors have warned that they will intensify their protests if their demands are not met.

The local government recently announced that the number of foreign workers would be reduced from 2,100 to 1,600. Cuts will mainly affect the hospitality sector, and new permanent resident applications will be reduced by 25%. The number of sales and service workers nominated by the government will also be cut from 800 to 200.

While the construction and healthcare sectors will receive some exemptions from the reduction, the government stated that limiting immigration is necessary to manage population growth. High population has led to a housing shortage and increased pressure on the healthcare system. Since May 9, many foreign workers have been protesting, demanding exemptions for those already living locally. They warn that sudden changes will negatively impact companies and lead to service disruptions.
