The revered Chardham Yatra has embarked on its spiritual journey today, May 10, opening with the gates of Kedarnath Temple amidst the majestic Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. This annual pilgrimage, initiated on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya, continues for six months until the day after Diwali, marking a profound period of devotion. The yatra includes visits to the sacred shrines of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, symbolizing a divine circuit.
This year, the portals of Kedarnath along with Yamunotri were opened early at 7 AM for ritualistic proceedings, with the Gangotri temple scheduled to open later at noon. The final shrine in the circuit, Badrinath, will welcome devotees on May 12, completing the quartet of spirituality. Each of these temples, nestled amid severe winter conditions and accessible for only half the year, represents a significant aspect of Hindu dharma, drawing thousands of pilgrims despite the challenging terrain.
As a part of the seasonal tradition, the deity's idol was carried from Ukhimath’s Omkareshwar temple, covering a trek of 47 kilometers to reach Kedarnath. Decorated with 20 quintals of flowers, the sanctum sanctorum presents a celestial aura that resonates with the chants and prayers of the devout.
Launching from Rishikesh, about 4,000 devotees in 135 vehicles set off to partake in this spiritual expedition, underlining the massive appeal and preparation that goes into facilitating this significant event. The Government of Uttarakhand, recognizing the influx from across the globe, has assured robust arrangements to host the pilgrims.
