Planning to buy land or build a house in Hyderabad's buffer zones? Think again! The city's hydra commissioner, A.V. Ranganath, has issued a stern warning against purchasing or constructing properties in these areas. He announced a series of measures to tackle illegal constructions and protect water bodies.
Ranganath stated that strict action would be taken against violators. In the first phase, authorities will prevent illegal constructions, followed by actions against those who have already built structures, including denying construction approvals. In the third phase, the city will focus on restoring lakes by desilting them and redirecting rainwater.
The commissioner revealed that numerous lakes and water bodies within the GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) limits have disappeared over the past 44 years, according to an NRSC (National Remote Sensing Centre) report. Shockingly, 60 to 80% of these lakes have been encroached upon.

Ranganath stressed the urgent need to protect these resources, warning that Hyderabad's future is at stake. He pledged to restore the chain of lakes and work with stakeholders to clear silted canals, which are essential for diverting water back into the lakes.
He cited instances from last year in Chanda Nagar, where illegal constructions were allowed in buffer zones, and warned that unauthorized buildings would face consequences. The commissioner urged citizens not to purchase properties within the Full Tank Level (FTL) and buffer zones of lakes. To curb these illegal activities, a special police station will soon be established.
Commissioner Ranganath cautioned realtors and builders against illegal constructions in water resource areas, especially around lakes. He advised the public to verify if properties are within the 30-meter buffer zone of lakes and consult Hydra for more information.
According to NRSC statistics, the area of water resources around Hyderabad has decreased by 61% over the past 45 years, leaving only 39% remaining, highlighting the critical need for action.
