The BJP has increased its strength in the Rajya Sabha, crossing the majority mark for the NDA alliance. Earlier, the NDA fell short of a majority in the Upper House, often depending on support from other parties to pass crucial bills. However, this situation has now changed with recent developments.
Twelve members were unanimously elected to the Rajya Sabha, including nine from the BJP and others from NDA allies like NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) and Rashtriya Lok Manch. This has boosted the BJP's strength to 96 seats. With 237 members currently in the 245-seat Rajya Sabha, 119 members are needed for a majority. The NDA now has 121 members, ensuring a smoother path for bill approvals in the Upper House. Meanwhile, opposition parties have a combined 85 members in the Rajya Sabha.
Among the newly elected members, BJP representatives include Mission Ranjan Das and Rameshwar Teli from Assam, Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar, Kiran Choudhary from Haryana, George Kurian from Madhya Pradesh, Dhirya Sheel Patil from Maharashtra, Mamata Mahanta from Odisha, Ravneet Singh Bittu from Rajasthan, and Rajeev Bhattacharya from Tripura. Other new members include Abhishek Manu Singhvi from Congress (Telangana), Nitin Patil from NCP (Maharashtra), and Upendra Kushwaha from RLM (Bihar).
