As the U.S. Presidential election approaches, President Joe Biden has made a significant decision, launching a new citizenship program for the spouses of American citizens who are immigrants. This initiative targets those who have been living in the U.S. illegally and have been waiting for citizenship for years. With the Presidential election scheduled for November 5th, this new immigration law has gained prominence.
Under this law, Miguel Aleman, a 39-year-old Uber driver who has been living in the U.S. with his American citizen wife and two children, will finally receive American citizenship. Aleman came to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of four and is one of the many immigrants from countries like Mexico, El Salvador, and the Philippines who have been living in the U.S. illegally, hoping for citizenship. The Republican Party, however, argues that this law is unlawful.
A survey conducted by the U.S. government in June revealed that there are around 500,000 spouses of American citizens who are foreign immigrants. By June 17, many of these individuals had been living in the U.S. for at least ten years. Additionally, about 50,000 children living with U.S. citizen parents will also gain citizenship under this law.
