A tragic incident involving the rape and murder of a female medical student at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has shocked the nation and sparked outrage. Amidst this tense situation, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of West Bengal has made a significant decision to ban three TV channels accused of spreading false news and conducting an anti-Bengal campaign.
The channels in question—ABP Ananda, Republic, and TV9—were banned by the state government for allegedly spreading misinformation about the medical student's murder and maligning the reputation of West Bengal. The TMC stated that these channels were airing false reports that were damaging the state's image. Furthermore, the TMC criticized the channels, suggesting that their promoters were trying to appease certain authorities in Delhi to avoid Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases against them.
The TMC government emphasized that they understood the pressure these media outlets were under, hinting at a broader political motive behind their actions. This ban has raised concerns over media freedom and the ongoing political tussle in the state.
