The Indian athletes are making waves at the Paris Olympics 2024, steadily increasing the medal tally. Aman Sehrawat delivered an impressive performance in the 57 kg wrestling category, winning a bronze medal after defeating Darian Toy Cruz from Puerto Rico with a score of 13-5. This victory takes India's total medal count to six in the ongoing Olympics. Notably, Aman is the only male wrestler representing India in these games. Despite a setback in the semifinals, he secured a decisive win in the bronze medal match.
Aman Sehrawat's Remarkable Achievement
After winning the bronze medal, Aman dedicated his victory to his parents and the country, stating, "My parents always wanted me to be a wrestler. They didn’t know much about the Olympics, but they wanted to see me as a winner. I dedicate my medal to my parents and my nation."
Breaking PV Sindhu's Record
Aman's success also marks a new record, as he becomes the youngest Indian athlete to win an individual Olympic medal, breaking the previous record held by badminton star PV Sindhu. Sindhu won a silver medal at the age of 21 years and 114 days in 2016. Aman, at 21 years and 24 days, surpasses this record.
Continuing India's Wrestling Tradition
India has consistently secured medals in wrestling at the Olympics since 2008. Aman Sehrawat's bronze medal continues this tradition in Paris 2024. Sushil Kumar won bronze in 2008 and silver in 2012, Yogeshwar Dutt claimed bronze in 2012, Sakshi Malik won bronze in 2016, Ravi Dahiya earned silver in 2020, and Bajrang Punia secured bronze in 2020. Before them, KD Jadhav won a bronze medal in wrestling in 1952.
Aman's achievement reinforces India's strong presence in wrestling on the global stage, carrying forward the legacy of previous medalists.
